The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the right bank of the river Yamuna in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was commissioned in 1631 by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal; it also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan himself.

Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, is a massive 16th-century Mughal monument. Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, it is approximately 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal. While often overshadowed by its "sister monument," the fort was the primary residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638 and is essentially a walled city.
